An Art Deco Themed Wedding at the Newport Art Museum | Newport, Rhode Island
Jaclyn & Matthew’s Art Deco Themed wedding at the Newport Art Museum was on point; from the venue down to the engagement ring!
I was so excited when Jaclyn called me to potentially photograph her wedding! I know her from my freshman year of college in the art program at Salve Regina! We both transferred out our sophomore year to continue our studies elsewhere. Jaclyn knew she wanted to come back to Newport so it was a fitting place to have her wedding. They got married at the chapel because it’s beautiful and matched the art museum in architectural elements and it was a nod to the past. Because we were at the chapel for the ceremony we were able to use McAuley hall for photos both inside and out! The ceremony was held by Jaclyn’s family priest which always makes for a more personal ceremony as stories from childhood are always told!
The planning of this wedding all started with the engagement ring! An authentic Art Nouveau ring that the two found at the Armory Antiques store here in Newport. It’s so unique with it’s gold filagree and coral stone. They both love antiques and often meander around the stores. Once engaged the meandering turning into a mission! They were on th hunt for antique brass floral holders, candelabras, brass knick-knacks. These were used in all different ways but they were mainly used to decorate the tables along side nautical figurines from the couple’s families personal collections and antique books from the 20’s and 30’s. Most of the covers were illustrated by a famous Art Nouveau cover artist, Margaret Armstrong. Along side the Art Nouveau there was an underlying nautical theme as that is an ode to the nautical past of Newport. Along with the whale figures on the tables the couple incorporated ships lanterns and an original antique navigational chart of Narragansett Bay as their guestbook. The chart was created by George W. Eldridge, whose closing on handwritten letters of the late 19th century was the lovely, “Yours for a fair tide”.
To keep the theme Jaclyn’s wedding gown, shoes and jewelry as well as the bridesmaids stormy grey beaded gowns all emulate the 20’s and the 30’s. The flowers were wide and were filled with fall shades of orange, greens and burgundy. The palette looked stunning against the navy blues, the brass accents, the dark walls and the artwork of the venue. Jaclyn was driven to the chapel in the perfect navy vintage Packard and then it whisked the couple away before heading to the Museum.
It was the perfect evening! Congratulations Jaclyn & Matthew!
